Jaw problems

Aligning your jaws and protecting your teeth

If your bite is badly aligned, it can affect the following:

  • your teeth and gums
  • the temporomandibular joint (TMJ)
  • your facial muscles

If you have TMJ disorder, it can lead to clenching of the jaw and grinding of the teeth – a condition known as bruxism. This often occurs while you sleep and it may cause facial pain, headaches, clicking when biting or chewing, as well as neck, shoulder or back pain.

Treatment for bruxism can include wearing a custom-made appliance, produced from an impression taken of your teeth. This keeps the muscles relaxed when you chew and prevents tooth erosion. Other treatments include:

  • Orthodontic appliances
  • Maxillofacial surgery
  • Replacement teeth

If you are suffering from jaw problems, your dentist may be able to help or they can refer you to a specialist.
