Root canal treatment

Preserving your teeth

Root canal therapy (or endodontics) can help to eliminate infection in the pulp, the innermost part of the tooth. This may have been caused by bacteria entering a deep filling, a crack or decay. If not treated, this infection can spread and cause an abscess, which may mean the tooth has to be removed.

Despite having a reputation as a painful treatment, we use a local anaesthetic and the procedure should be very similar to having a normal filling. However, it will generally require two or more appointments.

After removing the infection with tiny instruments, we clean the root canals with an anti-bacterial solution and then fill them to prevent further infection. We place a temporary filling to protect the tooth and then check it for any remaining infection. Finally, we permanently fill the tooth.

We recommend you attend regular hygiene appointments and dental check-ups to avoid the possibility of re-infection.
